There was someone I was completely preoccupied with for about six months in my early twenties.

I am going to call him A.

We had met through mutual friends, spent one evening talking until two in the morning, and then fell into this pattern of occasional contact that went nowhere.

He was warm when we spoke.

He did not follow up. I spent an embarrassing amount of time analyzing every message for signals and finding signals that probably were not there.

I thought about him while I was trying to fall asleep.

I turned down plans on evenings when there was a chance he might text because I did not want to be unavailable when he did.

This went on for six months. Nothing happened.

He was not cruel — he was just not particularly invested, and I was so invested I could not see it clearly.

I started reading about manifesting specific people partly out of desperation and partly because a friend had mentioned it and I had nothing to lose.

The first thing I encountered was Neville Goddard’s idea that everyone in your life is a reflection of your inner assumptions about them.

Which sounds either profound or completely nonsensical depending on where you are with this kind of thing, and I was somewhere in the middle.

What I eventually understood, not from one reading but from sitting with it for a while, is that the practice is not about controlling another person.

It is about changing what version of yourself shows up in their presence.

And that part, whatever you believe about the mechanics underneath it, is straightforwardly true.

The specific change for me was this: I stopped showing up as someone who was anxiously monitoring for evidence of his interest and started showing up as someone who was genuinely enjoying her own life and happened to be in the room.

The second version of me was more interesting to be around. I know this because things did change, not in a dramatic way, but the dynamic shifted.

He started initiating. We went on a few dates.

It ultimately did not go the way I had wanted it to and I also came out of the experience understanding myself better, which I think is the more important outcome.

Here is what I actually did.

5 Steps to Manifest a Specific Person

Step 1: Get Crystal Clear on What You Want

Write it down. The person, the relationship, what it feels like day to day, not just at the exciting moments.

I wrote about A for about a page — what I knew about him, what drew me to him, what I wanted us to actually be to each other.

The specificity felt slightly ridiculous while I was doing it.

It also clarified that some of what I wanted from him was less about him specifically and more about the type of relationship I was craving. That distinction mattered.

If you are manifesting a type rather than a specific person, describe the emotional experience of it as precisely as you can.

    Not a checklist of traits.

Step 2: Become the Version of You Who Attracts Them

Here’s where it gets interesting! Take a moment to step into their shoes. You’re going to temporarily embody the person you’re trying to manifest.

    • Reread the detailed description you created in Step 1.
    • Imagine you are that person.
    • Visualize yourself with their appearance, personality, and life experiences.
    • Feel their emotions, thoughts, and desires.
    • By stepping into their shoes, you gain access to their vibrational frequency. You begin to understand their energy and perspective.

Now, become that version of yourself. If they love confidence, start embodying confidence. If they value humor, let your playful side shine.

This is how you align with their frequency and make attraction effortless!

This step is crucial for establishing a deeper connection and aligning your energy with theirs.

    Step 3: Reverse Scripting

This was the technique that surprised me most.

I wrote a journal entry as if I were A. What he noticed about me. What he felt when we talked. What made him want to reach out.

It was uncomfortable to write because it required me to believe, at least for the length of the exercise, that I was someone worth writing that entry about.

Which I was not fully convinced of at the time. The self-doubt kept interrupting — this is just wishful thinking, you are making this up. I kept writing anyway.

What I noticed afterward was that the qualities I had written him noticing in me were qualities I actually had when I was not anxious.

The warmth, the directness, the way I could make a conversation go somewhere interesting. Those things existed. The anxiety was covering them.

Writing the entry from his perspective showed me that the problem was not that I was not enough for him.

It was that the version of me he kept encountering was the worried, monitoring one rather than the actual one.

Step 4: Become the Ideal Partner

Not perform it. Actually become it.

For me this meant: stop checking my phone for his messages more than once a day. Make plans on the evenings I had been keeping free in case he texted.

Go back to the things I had quietly dropped because they felt inconvenient with my attention on him — the gym, the creative project, the friendships I had been slightly neglecting.

This is the part that gets described in manifestation content as raising your vibration, which I find hard to say without feeling self-conscious about it.

The practical version is just: fill your life back up. Stop organizing it around someone who has not asked you to.

The shift in how I carried myself was noticeable to me before it was noticeable to anyone else.

I stopped dreading the possibility that he would not text. I started genuinely not caring on most days, which is different from pretending not to care.

That difference — between genuine and performed indifference — is something people feel even if they cannot articulate it.

    Step 5: Visualize the Union

Every night for a few weeks I spent a few minutes imagining a simple scenario. Just being with him, having a conversation, the ease of it.

Not the declaration of feelings, not the future we might have.

Just a moment of genuine, comfortable connection. I tried to feel it rather than watch it like a film.

Then I stopped thinking about it until the next time I did the practice.

The letting go is the part I am least able to explain in terms that do not sound like spiritual vocabulary.

What I can say is that the obsessive monitoring — the constant checking to see if the manifestation was working, the analysis of every interaction for evidence — made me feel worse and kept me focused on the gap between what I had and what I wanted.

When I stopped doing that, I felt better. And when I felt better, things moved.

A few things I would tell myself from that period:

The technique might not produce the outcome you are picturing. In my case it produced something real but not exactly what I scripted.

Which I now think was the right outcome for where I was then, even though that is easy to say looking back.

The most useful thing that came out of it was not A.

It was understanding that the anxious, monitoring version of me was not my best self in relationships, and that I had the capacity to be different.

That was worth more than any specific person.

Do the steps. Then genuinely go live your life. The second part is not a technique. It is the point.
